Chiwoko emerged Central Region winners of the Centre for Youth and Children Affairs (Ceyca) Child Protection Trophy after beating Livimbo Primary School 3-1 on Saturday at the Kamuzu Institute for Sports.
Chilambula came third after thrashing Lilongwe Boys 3-1 at the same venue in a competition competed for by children from schools, prisons and communities. The Lilongwe competition attracted 16 teams and Chiwoko will meet winners from Zomba, Blantyre and Mzuzu on July 27 at the Lilongwe Community Centre Ground.
Ceyca Executive Director Rodgers Newa said during the Lilongwe final the aim of the trophy was to protect the rights of children, including juveniles who are in prisons.
“Juveniles also have their rights which need to be protected. We need to create awareness to them so that they know their rights and that they are preserved,” he said.
In a separate interview, Newa said the country needed a society free from crimes and that one way of achieving that was to involve children in different sporting activities and teach them about their rights.
“In this we have asked the children to refrain from malpractices, the parents to teach their children good manners and the government to put in place policies conducive to the youth,” he said.
The guest of honour at the prize presentation ceremony, Lilongwe City Deputy Mayor Beatrice Baisi, commended the winning team.
She said it was good for Ceyca to involve children in various sporting events to keep them away from contracting the deadly HIV/Aids.
“I wish to commend you and the sponsors Unicef for the job well done in keeping our children busy with sporting activities,” said Baisi.
She then promised that the City Assembly would reintroduce the Mayor’s Trophy which, she said, was in the budget for this year.
