Malawians can do better with better politics
Listening to the speeches made at yesterday’s rally by the United Democratic Front (UDF), what they have said in the recent past and what has come from the “ruling” Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and other parties so far, one gets the impression that politically Malawi is going nowhere.
It is the same language of petty accusations and counter-accusations on issues that really don’t matter anymore to the average citizen. The Malawian of today seems to have out-grown partisan politics; he or she is a more sophisticated citizen who needs politics of issues, maturity or serious national agendas.
The Malawian is looking for leadership that will take this country out of its age-old poverty trap to ensure that the political freedom that people have fought for since the colonial times gets its true value in terms of development. People want systems that work, a public sector that delivers in its social service obligations, leaders who are inspiring or a country where one can plan their life and realise their dreams—in short, a land of opportunity.
Already, some countries in the region similar to Malawi are taking longer strides and freeing themselves from the vicious cycle of stagnation while this country is busy dragging itself into the past. What for?
In other words, if the leaders of UDF, DPP, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and other parties want to be taken seriously, it is high time they stopped their seemingly childish tit-for-tat podium politics.
If Muluzi, Mutharika and others have run out of ideas, there is still time for them to leave the stage and pave way for new blood, instead of dragging the country into politics of insults. |
