Village headman Peso Mdewa, 47, from the central district of Mchinji has been arrested for burning his seven-year-old son for allegedly stealing beef which was prepared for the family’s meal.
Mchinji Police public relations officer Felix Chisakasa confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying Mdewa on Monday burnt his son’s hands when his wife, who is the boy’s stepmother, reported to him that the boy had stolen relish.
The woman told the police in interrogation that the child is troublesome and that he deserved the punishment.
“Reports from the village headman’s relations indicate that the woman has been ill-treating the little boy since she married the village headman who abandoned his first wife,” said Chisakasa.
He said the boy is currently in bad shape and has since been admitted to Mchinji District Hospital.
Mdewa has since been charged with causing grievous harm which carries a maximum sentence of 3 years imprisonment.
He hails from Mdewa Village Traditional Authority Mduwa in Mchinji, where the incident took place. |
