Be my valentine
Tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s Day—the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other—sending each other Valentine’s cards, candy, flowers and other gifts, often anonymously.
The day is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
Interesting things happen on this day and I have fond memories of what happened last year when an excited female workmate received an anonymous parcel but got a shock of her life when she discovered that it contained a tattered red underwear and condoms—it is just part of the fun that comes with this special day.
More interesting was this incident that happened to a friend at Chancellor College a few years ago. My friend, John, had bought and delivered a bouquet of very expensive roses for his ‘ma hope’ on Valentine’s Day. A day later, he got the shock of his life when he discovered that his ‘ma hope’ had delivered the same flowers to a man of her heart.
Stranger still, an excited ‘yaro’ (first year student) at the same Chancellor College was left rueing his wasted cash when he found a bouquet of flowers he had delivered to his ‘ma hope’ in the dustbin.
Ladies and gentlemen, on a special day like this even sport loses its attraction and focus rightly shifts to love talk.
It is a day when Thierry Henry, wonderkid Wayne Rooney and even our own Joseph Kamwendo take time off from taunting opponents on the pitch with vintage displays focus all their energies on having a quality time with their loved ones.
I guess the man from Kasungu who torched seven houses last year after being refused sex by his wife, will also take this day as an opportunity to make amends and express his true love for his spouse other than burning houses.
Tomorrow, the newspapers will be filled with love messages from lovers across the country and I am hoping that one of them will read like this: Ethel: You are the queen of my heart, I wouldn’t have been where I am without you my sweetheart, be my valentine—Bingu.
Or I could take this opportunity to place my valentine message which reads like this: Serena Williams: Special thoughts for you this valentine’s day. You will always have a special place in my heart. I love you too—Garry.
