Another man in for hacking wife
by Steven Pembamoyo Banda, 01 February 2007 - 11:52:23
Police in Nambuma in the central district of Lilongwe, have arrested 29-year-old Pikeni Kathumba on suspicion that he seriously hacked his wife’s left arm and causing other serious cuts on her body.
The woman’s father, Felix Kalambule, said his daughter Fanny Kalambule, 24, married Kathumba in 2000 as a second wife and the couple have a child.
The father said on the day his daughter met the fate, her co-wife asked for money from the husband who put K200 in an envelope which he gave to Fanny to deliver. The father said Fanny opened the envelope and removed K100 for keeps.
“When her husband learnt what she had done they picked up a quarrel and my son in-law got a knife and hit my daughter on the arm with it. He also hit her several times with it and she sustained a lot of deep cuts,” said Kalambule.
He said Fanny was later taken to Nambuma Mission Hospital where she was first treated before being taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where she is now.
KCH officials could not be reached Wednesday to comment on the condition of the woman but the father expressed fear that his daughter’s arm may be amputated.
Kathumba was arrested by the police the same day but he denied the allegations. He is under custody at the Kanengo Police Station and will answer charges of intention to cause grievous harm.
The two come from Madika Village, T/A Kabudula in Lilongwe.
Another man from the central district of Dowa, Herbert Mankhwala, is currently serving a 14-year jail term after he was found guilty of hacking his wife Marietta.
