Cash-strapped University of Malawi said yesterday the K900 million national budget proposal for 2002/03 is not enough to meet operation costs, making it necessary for the institution to continue talks with government.
University Finance Officer Yafet Malunga, in an interview said the allocation represented half of the K1.8 billion expenditure proposal presented by the University of Malawi to government.
Finance and Economic Planning Minister Friday Jumbe said when he presented the national budget in Parliament on Friday that the university was allocated K900 million which he described as “a lion’s share” considering that the total amount for subvented parastatals was K1.672 billion.
But Malunga said while the amount could be termed “a lion’s share”, the university strongly felt it was not enough to cater for the institution’s needs.
He said the university was in deep financial problems with, among other things, debts “in excess of K250 million” to be serviced. Last year the university was allocated about K500 million after presenting a K1.4 billion budget.
In his budget statement, Jumbe said although there has been increased allocation to the University of Malawi, the university would in 2002/2003 financial year start admitting deserving full fee-paying students in addition to those of partial or full scholarships.
“These reforms will assist to raise the revenue base for the University of Malawi,” he said.
From January this year, government was giving the University of Malawi K50 million monthly allocation which was reduced to K12 million in June 2002.
