Government, Sports Council and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) have finally agreed to employ an expatriate national soccer coach to replace fired German Burkhard Ziese (in the picture) who was dismissed on disciplinary grounds.
According to a government source, the agreement was reached at a meeting held last week.
The source, who asked for anonymity, said most of the delegates at the meet were of the opinion that the country must employ an expatriate coach, contrary to suggestions by some quarters that Fam should either employ a local coach or give a chance to current caretaker mentor Kinnah Phiri.
“Most of the delegates felt that it is proper for Malawi to have an expatriate coach this January...one who is already fully experienced so that he develops the team ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
“It was also the opinion of many delegates that the current local coaches have not attained the required high level of coaching and would not prepare the team well for the world showcase,” said the source, adding “it takes time to develop into a full capable coach”.
He said another meeting slated for today between Fam and stakeholders on the issue has been organised mainly to brief the association’s on the decision and get their comments.
Asked to comment on the issue Sports Council executive secretary George Jana confirmed the meeting took place but declined to discuss it.
“These were just preliminary agreements and what was agreed there may happen or not, especially after getting the input of other stakeholders,” he said.
Fam general secretary Yasin Osman also could not be drawn to comment on the issue, saying “something was happening” about the issue of national coach, but he said he did not want to divulge more information on the matter.
Fam president Walter Nyamilandu was quoted in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Times as saying: “We don’t want to make decisions in a hurry, that is why we have invited all the stakeholders on the way forward.”
Kinnah could not be reached for his comment Tuesday, but since taking over Flames in October this year, the coach has led the team to three wins and three losses.
