The United Democratic Front has said last week’s by-elections in Chiradzulu and Salima were a demonstration that multiparty democracy was taking root in the country.
UDF deputy publicity secretary Ken Lipenga said his party was pleased that the elections took place in a free, fair and peaceful manner in line with what the party has always advocated.
The UDF has also expressed its pleasure with the outcome of the by-elections in Chiradzulu West and thanked the people of that constituency for voting for a UDF candidate.
Said Lipenga: “The UDF believes that the outcome of the Chiradzulu elections is a true reflection of the confidence that the people of this country have in their young democratic institutions, in the ruling party and in the government under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Bakili Muluzi.”
“We believe that what the people of Malawi need now is further encouragement with their social and economic programmes in order that they may continue to consolidate their democracy,” he said.
Lipenga said that, despite countless court injunctions, the people of Chiradzulu had made their voice heard through the ballot box.
“They have sent a loud and clear message which contradicts the endless press releases from the prophets of doom and gloom who are forever purveying fabrications about the state of Malawian democracy to the outside world. The Chiradzulu message is a sharp rebuke to those lies,” said Lipenga.
He said that the UDF was now calling on the people of Chiradzulu and Salima to continue to work together regardless of party or religious affiliation to promote the development of the country. |
