Tourists sample Nkhata Phungwee!

Those who felt Phungwee! parties are exclusively for urban centres such as Blantyre better think twice.
Stroll to a non-fancy looking Mayoka Bar at Nkhata Bay boma every Friday and you will sample a Phungwee!
This is when local tour guides, curio sellers, tourists and many locals converge to dance to Chilimika and Ingoma fused with Western music.
Last Friday night to Saturday morning the mood got more crazy as tourists sampled the fancy dress party.
Several men were in ladies dresses or blouses with bras and girls were in a workman gear. And in that attire couples invaded the dance floor wiggling to the tunes of a local string bass guitar dished out by local musician Gaspa Nali and his crew.
Nali, 22, from Mzimba, was at his best on his instruments, matching well with his equally good local songs. As he did this, everything went haywire on the dancing floor in the bar, erected on top of the waters of Lake Malawi.
“Every Friday the fun starts with a barbecue and tourists sample local and international dishes in a relaxed mood while local artists or dance groups dish out their music,” said Gary Wissill, who runs the joint alongside partner, Kathryn Ottaway.
Cameille Handley, one of the revellers who sampled the fun said: “This is great. Malawi has such fun and warmth. The dance party was great and can tempt you to extend your stay in this country.”
