Godambe triumphs in Cresta golf tourney
by Leonard Sharra, 14 November 2006 - 05:42:58
An impressive score of 41 points enabled Lilongwe-based golfer Sunil Godambe to win the inaugural Cresta Crossroads golf tournament on Saturday at the 18-hole Lilongwe Golf Club course.
Godambe came out victorious over a field of 116 golfers to win the first prize of two return air tickets to Golf View Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia plus a trophy.
“This is the first Cresta golf tournament and I am happy to be the first winner. I thank the golf committee for the good organisation and the greenkeeper for keeping the course in good condition,” said Godambe after receiving his prizes.
On second position was Dhire Goutam, who scored 39 points to earn himself a weekend for two at Club Makokola in Mangochi. Aarom Chen came third after counting out two other golfers on 37 points. He won a voucher for two nights’ accommodation for two at Cresta Crossroads.
Michiko Sujimoto was all smiles after winning the first prize for the best lady golfer through another impressive score of 40 points. She got two return air tickets to Victoria Falls courtesy of Air Zimbabwe.
Her runner-up was Giesla Niesel on 39 points and she will enjoy a weekend for two at Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre.
Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) secretary Mukesh Vashi won the prize for nearest to the line on hole nine with Neil Nyirongo scooped the prize for nearest the pin on hole 13.
Clement Ndala, who played the most golf, sent the audience into uncontrollable laughter, when he vowed to keep his position for the next two years.
“This is my first time to play golf and when I got this [the last] position, I was saying I will not play golf again. But after being encouraged by my colleagues that there is a prize for it, I have declared to keep my position for the next two years,” he said.
Speaking before prize presentation, LGC captain Stallard Mpata hailed Cresta for staging the tournament and the golfers for coming in large numbers.
The captain introduced new LGC board chairman Smile Namagonya who took over the hot seat from Clement Chilingulo last week.
Cresta sales executive Irene Chihana thanked Air Zimbabwe, Club Makokola, Cresta Golf View, Cresta Mowana Safari Lodge (Botswana), Ryalls Hotel and other companies for sponsoring the tournament.
She presented a K25,000 donation to the LGC golf committee.
After the prize presentation, Cresta auctioned an accommodation voucher for two at Cresta Mowana which has accommodated top world figures like former American president Bill Clinton.
Seasoned golfer Waheed Abubaker bought the voucher at K40,000. The money will be used for charity work at Salima School for the Blind.
