Civo United’s coach Young Chimodzi on Sunday lived up to his word and got his side out of the relegation murky waters with a 1-0 triumph over Super Escom at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo to climb from 12th to eighth position as the K50 million TNM Super League draws towards the end.
The civil servants are now in comfort zone with 28 points from 27 games.
A clearly relieved Civo’s vice general secretary Dave Medi said the victory was hugely significant.
“It was a crucial game and we had to win at all cost because relegation stared us in the face. We still have one game before we finish the season (against Nchalo) and we also hope to do well.
“Taking into consideration that we had to deregister nine key players, it was a rough ride but the boys put up a brave fight and we hope that we’ll start afresh next season,” said Medi.
Chikondi Likwemba was the toast of the day for Civo when he struck the lone goal midway the first half direct from a freekick that eluded the wall and gave goalkeeper Simeon Kapuza not a prayer—it was a beauty.
Escom’s coach Dave Mpesi attributed the loss to poor finishing.
“We also have some injuries. Victor Nyirenda did not play because of an injury and Chiukepo Msowoya is also nursing an injury but forced himself to play,” said Mpesi.
Escom are still on fourth position with 49 points from 27 games and have a game against Red Lions before they finish the season.
