Heads to roll at Super Escom
by Garry Chirwa, 14 November 2006 - 05:40:41
Super Escom, an outfit plastered with talent, on Monday said a massive reshuffle is on the cards following the team’s poor showing especially in the second round of the K50 million TNM Super League.
Club chair Fanwell Nkhono said the performance of the team left a lot to be desired considering the investment that was ploughed into it.
So painful has been the reality on the ground that the expensively assembled side has changed its tune on joining one of the continental Caf tournaments.
“Looking at the investment that was ploughed into the team, there was an awful lot of expectation but we have failed to give back in terms of results.
“We are not happy at all, we are a sad lot because the expectation was that we would win the championship or at least finish as runners-up. So there are likely to be some changes which will be announced very shortly,” said Nkhono.
Commenting on the Caf tourney, the Escom gaffer said: “We had the blessings [from management] to join one of the continental tournaments and we still nurture those ambitions, but I think we have to be realistic. We cannot compete against the elite of the continent when we have finished fourth in the domestic league,” said Nkhono
An inside source revealed that the electricians are planning to give their current coach Dave Mpesi the boot.
However, Nkhono said the review will not be centred on the technical setup alone.
“We are looking at beefing up our technical team by reviewing the entire system. In the past five games we have dropped 12 points and if we were organised we should have had 61 points by now. It gives us food for thought about our technical setup since we have quality players,” said the Escom boss.
Escom are currently on fourth position with 49 points from 27 games and have a single game before they wind up the season.
Nkhono said the team’s management set 70 points as the target for the technical committee which comprises coach Mpesi, his assistant Aubrey ‘Lineker’ Nankhuni, team manager Simon Mkandawire and his assistant Billy Tewesa.
However, Mpesi denied being given targets.
“Actually it was me who declared that we would finish among the top four teams and we have achieved that because we are likely to finish on fourth position,” said Mpesi.
Asked why the team did not live to expectations, he said: “We roped in a number of new players and it takes time to put the team together, but hopefully we’ll be at our best next season,” he said.
