NBS takes banking to Nkhata Bay
by Edwin Nyirongo, 13 November 2006 - 09:04:46
NBS Bank Limited on Friday officially opened its Nkhata Bay branch to spread its footprints in five of the six districts in the Northern Region
Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe, who officially opened the branch, said government was pleased with NBS Bank’s decision to open a branch in Nkhata Bay as the decision will enhance development.
“Banks play a crucial role in the development of a country by providing financial assistance to businesses. Their existence in many places pleases government and we cannot take that for granted,” he said.
Gondwe called on the banks to provide the best services they can to the people to uplift their lives.
NBS Bank board chairman Felix Mlusu said his bank wants to partner with the people in developing the country.
Mlusu—who is also managing director of NBS Bank’s parent company Nico Holdings Limited—said they opened a branch at Nkhata Bay to cut the cost of travelling to Mzuzu or Dwangwa in Nkhotakota just to access its services. He said travelling long distances for banking services was also not secure.
NBS Bank chief executive officer John Bizwick asked government to open accounts with it to service its numerous employees better who are the bank’s customers.
Other notable dignitaries present at the ceremony included People’s Progressive Movement president and Nkhata Bay South MP Aleke Banda and Nkhata Bay Central MP Symon Vuwa Kaunda.
