Silver maintain pressure on nomads
by Garry Chirwa , 13 November 2006 - 08:37:57
Silver Strikers continued to breath down MTL Wanderers’ necks in the fight for the K50 million TNM Super League honours Sunday when they came from behind to beat Sammy’s United 2-1 at the Kamuzu Stadium.
The bankers, who suffered a painful 1-0 defeat at the hands of the nomads on Saturday, showed characteristic grit coming from behind to bag full points as desperation for the flagship league title took its toll on a rainy afternoon.
Another plus was the opportunism of two-goal hero McNeil Chitsundi who kept the bankers title hopes on the boil. They are still on equal footing with the Lali Lubani Road outfit with 59 points, but the nomads have two games before they wrap up the season and, with a better goal difference while the bankers have a single game.
The bankers must win their remaining game against defending champions Big Bullets and at the same time hope that the nomads collect only a point from their remaining two games against Eagle Beaks and Blue Eagles—quite a tall order.
Sammy’s stunned the bankers in the 24th minute when midfielder Chikondi ‘Doctor’ Banda’s spectacular bicycle kick left the bankers’ goal tender Terence Kandoje clawing at thin air. Sammys’s—who have finished the league on 12th position with 27 points, led 1-0 at half time.
But they lost their rhythm in the second half in which Chitsundi and winger Emmanuel Chipatala proved a handful.
Chitsundi struck the first just six minutes into the second half when he utilised a cross from Chipatala and with eight minutes to full time, the blooming striker claimed a double to keep the bankers slim title hopes on the boil.
Silver’s coach Alex Masanjala said the win has given them a fresh sense of hope.
“As I said our destiny is no longer in our hands, we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that Wanderers should lose both their remaining games or at least collect a point, but that means we should also win our remaining game against Bullets,” said Masanjala.
