The government will punish any business person who holds a wholesale licence but trades as a retailer as well, deputy minister of commerce and industry James Chikwenga told Parliament Monday.
He said that the ministry is aware that some wholesale licence holders double as retailers.
Chikwenga was answering a question from MP for Dowa Ngala Anaclet Nyemba (MCP) who asked the ministry whether or not it is aware that some Asian traders who have opened wholesale businesses at Madisi trading centre do retail business under one roof, using the wholesale licence only.
The deputy minister who was erroneously referred to as deputy agriculture and irrigation minister in Monday’s edition of The Nation said that the ministry carried out an investigation and discovered that some traders, not only at Madisi, were involved in the malpractice. He said his ministry would soon punish such traders.
Before answering the question, Chikwenga complained to Speaker Sam Mpasu that The Nation newspaper associated him with an issue that never involved him.
The paper inadvertently referred to him as deputy minister of agriculture and irrigation, who was queried in the House on Friday for his lack of knowledge on issues that affect the ministry. Andrew Chiwoza is the deputy minister of agriculture.
Chikwenga added that he was not in the House at the time the issue of lack of knowledge was raised.
Mpasu advised the deputy minister to lodge the complaint to Parliamentary Committee on the Media.
