Strong winds swept away three fishermen using a small fishing boat on Lake Malawi from Chizumulu Island to Nkhata Bay shores in the late hours of Friday night.
The three, Edward and Vita Mpalaweze and Anderson Munguza, said in an interview on Saturday they could not believe their luck that they survived the tide in the small boat, saying they made it to the lakeshore through God’s grace.
“On Friday night we went to retrieve the nets we had cast in the lake not far from the island. Suddenly a strong wind started blowing across the lake and we knew our end was near as we could not make it back to Chizumulu,” said Edward Mpalaweze, captain of the fishing crew.
He said the trio just stayed still, waiting for imminent death as their boat drifted away along with the wind.
“After more than 12 hours without food we found ourselves swept ashore near Nkhata Bay boma. By the time we came ashore all our clothes were in tatters,” said Mpalaweze.
Good Samaritans at Nkhata Bay donated clothes and food to the stranded fishermen, who have since approached Nkhata Bay District Commissioner Moses Chimphepo to help them with transport back to their home island, a development the DC confirmed, saying arrangements were being made.
