The country’s sole fixed telephone operator Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) on Thursday launched the MTL toll-free service which seeks to remove the burden on customers of service providers when they want to talk to them.
The new system will enable customers to call the companies without paying a penny. The cost will thus be transferred to the companies in the same way a reverse call works.
MTL chief commercial officer Stephan Hoehne said the system will help to strengthen the relationship that exists between various companies and their customers.
He said it will work perfectly well for institutions like hotels that would want to gain a competitive advantage by giving the clients a service that is flexible, faster and economic.
He also noted that banks and consumer goods manufacturers also stand to benefit as wholesalers need a flexible way of making orders to replenish their stocks.
“A company whose business success relies highly on after sales service or customer service requires toll-free phone service in order to provide a flexible, faster and economical way of contacting the customer service department.
“Even media houses wishing to receive news from field staff may provide the toll-free phone facility to the reporters so that they can call in and file their reports,” added Hoehne.
The system has functions such as one number which MTL allocates to a company through which they can direct incoming calls to a specified direction. It also has functions like call-forwarding when busy or when there is no reply and call-barring.
Through the system a company is at liberty to set the maximum calls that can be received over a specified time.
Press Corporation Limited (PCL) chief executive officer Matthews Chikaonda said with the new customers companies will be able to respond to customer needs as they will notified of any complaint with speed.
PCL is the majority shareholder in the consortium that bought 80 percent MTL shares during a privatisation deal early this year.
