Nchalo United striker Isaac Maluwa and Sammy’s United midfielder Harold Zulu have won the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) K10,000 monthly player awards for the months of August and September respectively.
The awards, which were introduced by Sulom at the beginning of the season as a way of recognising players who perform well, were first won by MTL Wanderers forward sensational Aggrey Kanyenda in May. He was followed by Eagle Beaks defender and national Under-17 team captain Harry Nyirenda in June.
Sulom general secretary Chris Kamphinda Banda said Tuesday the awards were not given in the month of July because the league was on recess.
“But the delay to present the August and September awards was because the selection committee was busy with other things despite the fact that the nominations committee had already presented the names of the nominated players,” said Kamphinda Banda.
The Sulom chief executive said for Maluwa to win the August award, he beat nominees such as Dwangwa United’s Darlington Chithala and Big Bullets’ Charles Kalaile but the stiffest competition was between the winner and Kalaile.
Zulu beat Moses Chavula of MTL Wanderers, Moyale’s Kumbukani Madise and Sammy’s United’s Amadu Ali for the September award.
“We should thank all our partners in the selection process because they don’t look at their own players, but those who have made a tremendous impact on their teams in that month,” he said.
He said the presentations will be made after arrangements had been made with the League’s sponsors Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM).
Both players will receive K10,000 each.
Apart from the monthly player awards, Sulom is also running awards for the entire season’s best supporters club, best coaching panel, most disciplined team, best management team, best defender, best midfielder, most improved player, best goal keeper and best striker.
All the categories will attract cash prizes ranging from K10,000 to K75,000 to be given during the league prize presentation ceremony in December.
