President Bakili Muluzi has urged traditional leaders in the country to promote unity among the people.
The president was speaking on Saturday in Dowa district where he elevated Traditional Authority Dzoole to senior chief and sub-traditional authority Mkukula to full chief, respectively.
He said that it was the duty of traditional leaders to preach unity among their people to maintain the peace prevailing in the country. He also encouraged people to be proud of their cultural heritage.
Dzoole and Mkulula are among the many traditional leaders president Muluzi has elevated since taking over the presidency in 1994. The president said he would continue to recognise hard-working traditional leaders by promoting them.
Currently, the government has a scheme through which traditional leaders are being given better houses and the president assured that the scheme would continue.
Earlier in the day, the President handed over 18 houses government has built for needy people at Mlengwe and other villages in the district.
“I am so grateful to the government and the president personally for building me this good house. For may years I have been staying in a dilapidated hut,” remarked Herbert Mbwazi, a subsistence farmer who looks after her very old grand mother.
Group village headman Mlengwe, another beneficiary of the housing scheme, also thanked the government for the project, which he said is likely to benefit many poor people in the country.
