Three people died on the spot while two of the15 casualties died at the hospital when a minibus they were travelling in collided with an MDC Football Club bus on Saturday morning on Makata road in Blantyre.
The casualties are admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. None of them is an MDC football player.
MDC assistant coach MacDonald Mtetemera said yesterday the accident happened soon after the bus had just picked two players from the populous Ndirande Township.
“What happened is that a vehicle in front of our bus stopped suddenly trying to branch off towards the Blantyre Water Board road. Our driver then swerved to the right trying to overtake the stationary car when it collided with an on coming minibus,” said Mtetemera.
Southern Region Police Commissioner Often Thyolani confirmed the accident in a separate interview, saying three people, including a minor and the minibus driver, died on the spot while another one died at the hospital.
“I don’t have enough details at the moment. You can get in touch with the regional traffic officer tomorrow (today) for more details,” said Thyolani.
Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital director Ibrahim Idana said his hospital had taken in 15 casualties with a variety of injuries and two of them died at the hospital, bringing the death toll to five.
“One of them died at the hospital yesterday (Saturday) with internal brain injuries,” said Idana. “Another one just died today (Sunday) in the intensive care unit.”
Mtetemera said the club was as of yesterday still looking for their driver, who went missing soon after the accident.
“But we are still looking for him to get more details. We started looking for him from yesterday (Saturday) and we did the same today (yesterday), but we can not trace him,” said Mtetemera.
