A magnificent 50-bed Victoria Hotel opened its doors to the public on Friday sending a warning to other players in the industry that a new competitor is born offering affordable rates.
Faruk Gani, Chairman of Tourism Investments Limited, proprietors of the hotel, said during the opening ceremony that emerging in a field which already has a number of players placed to them new challenges.
“Releasing that we are taking off while there are other established competitors, it is a must for us to offer our services at highly competitive prices,” said Gani.
Overlooking the Blantyre Sports Club’s golf course and boasting of single, double, family suites and VIP rooms, charges range from $70 to $90, with the VIP pegged at $180 which are all inclusive of service charge, tax and breakfast.
All the 50 rooms have access to satellite TV, phones and Internet connections.
Working under the motto ‘Executive Accommodation-Malawian Hospitality’ the hotel also boasts of a swimming pool, conference room and a restaurant. However at present the eating place will only cater for those who are residing at the hotel.
With its features modelled on the Town and City Lodges in South Africa but with a more African feel in decor, the hotel structure is a work of art.
Efforts to venture into the hotel project, according to Gani, are a direct consequence to complaints from foreign guests over high rates and limited accommodation in Blantyre.
“Thus we realised that there is a big gap in the hotel industry and we came up with Victoria Hotel to fill that gap,” said Gani.
Gani said Victoria Hotels will not offer alcoholic beverages to customers.
“In our survey, we discovered that we can run a hotel without offering alcohol. People have told us that as long as they can find a clean sleeping place, they are okey,” said Gani.
Tourism Investments Limited, comprising both local and foreign investors and having Victoria Hotel as its first investment, plans to open another hotel either Blantyre or Lilongwe.
