Nico Life Insurance Company has pledged to double the sponsorship for the Malawi Police Service (MPS) Inter-regional sports competition, having been impressed by the organisation of the tournament and the response from the service.
Nico Life’s general manager Stain Singo made the pledge at National Police Headquarters in Lilonngwe on Saturday during the presentation of prizes to winners of the inaugural competition, which attracted about 100 participants from all the four policing regions including Police College.
“This tournament began as a small thought but as sponsors we have been overwhelmed by the response from the service. We were thinking of making it an annual event and my chairman Mr Felix Mlusu has just directed that we should double the sponsorship from next year.
“We have pumped in K750,000 and this means next’s year’s sponsorship will be at K1.5 million,” said Singo, drawing applause from the gathering at Inspector General’s ground.
Singo said one of the objectives behind his company’s gesture was to thank Malawi police for the custom the insurance firm gets from the service. “We have some of our biggest clients in the Malawi Police Service. We get over K9m pemiums from the every year and we wanted to say thank you for this custom,” said Singo.
Police Inspector General Oliver Kumbambe saluted Nico Insurance for sponsoring the competition and pledging to increase the stakes.
“We are very thankful to Nico for this kind gesture.
“Sport provide police officers an opportunity to relax after strenuous work. Sport is also important in the development of healthy minds and healthy bodies for police officers. I feel delighted and proud with what we have seen today. The tournament has revealed some talent that was hidden in the service.
“If this talent is tapped, the police can contribute significantly to the development of sports,” said Kumbambe.
The police boss urged other companies to follow Nico’s example and work with the service in its efforts to reduce crime.
During the presentation, Southern Region was presented with a shield, a trophy and a K75,000 cheque for emerging overall winners with 18 points. Police Headquarters came second with 12 points and got K50,000 and a trophy while Central Region received K25,000 and a trophy for finishing third.
In the team events, Police Headquarters emerged champions in football with Southern Region coming tops in Tug of War, Darts and Volleyball. Central Region were the netball queens.
