Muluzi lashes out at Mpinganjira

President Bakili Muluzi yesterday took a swipe at his former cabinet minister Brown Mpinganjira, accusing him of spreading false stories that Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi gave the President K170 million to Islamise the country and other states in southern Africa.
Speaking at Kamphata in Lilongwe South East, President Muluzi said it was madness for the former minister, now leader of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) pressure group, to create false stories that would bring confusion and instability among the people.
“That’s madness. I have never received any tambala,” said the President and asked Mpinganjira to resign from politics if the game has become too difficult for him to play.
The President also said he would not allow any groups of people to form political parties based on religion.
“I’ll not allow anybody to use a religious faith—whether Christianity or Islam—to start a political party. As president of this country, the custodian of the Constitution of Malawi and a person who wants to consolidate peace, I’ll not allow this country to be divided,” he said.
Some church leaders have openly opposed amendment of Section 83 (3) of the Constitution to provide for an open-ended term of office for the country’s president.
“Church leaders, like any other Malawian, should preach peace for the benefit of the country,” the president said.
Like the president, traditional authority Kalumbu told the rally that he would not hesitate to dismiss any traditional leader who does not support the government.
During the rally some UDF officials were presented with medals in honour of their contribution to the party.
