Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody six people suspected of having had a hand in the murder of an unidentified man whose body was found without private parts.
Kasungu Police public relations officer Andrew Gada on Sunday identified the suspects as Maxon Sandilamu, 35, Benedict Jere, 68, Madalitso Nyirenda, 23, Andrew Fachi, 26, Absalom Nkhoma, 26 and Hilda Kanyerere, 26.
“The victim was doing some piece work in Jere’s garden together with Sandilamu. After finishing the work they got paid on Friday, September 8. And on Tuesday, September 12, the victim was found dead with his private parts removed by some locals. The matter was then reported to Nkhamenya Police Unit,” said Gada.
He said the police investigated the matter and it transpired that the last person to be seen with the deceased was Sandilamu.
Gada said when called to report to the police station to help identify the deceased, Sandilamu refused.
“Later the police went to get him and were surprised to see that he had scratches all over his face as if he was involved in a fight but he could not explain how he got them. When asked why he did not come to identify his colleague, he said it was Jere who told him not to do so,” said Gada.
The Police spokesperson said when the police asked Sandilamu for the keys to his house to conduct a search, he said the keys were with his wife, Kanyerere.
However, according to Gada, Kanyerere told the police the house was locked and that she had lost the keys. When the police went to the house they found it open.
“These people are not willing to help the police with the investigations. It is like they are hiding something. That is why they are in custody together with the other men who were also around the area pending further investigations. They have not yet been charged,” said the police PRO.
According to Gada, Sandilamu said he did not know the particulars of the deceased and he was just calling him Ngozo.
The six suspects are from Jonas Village, T/A Kaluluma in Kasungu.
