The Chitipa-Karonga piped water improvement project which was approved by the World Bank two years ago has delayed because of inadequate resources, Minister of Water Development Lee Mlanga told Parliament last week.
He was answering a question from Member of Parliament for Karonga Northwest Green Mwamondwe (Aford) who sought an explanation over the delay.
“Can the minister ensure that this project takes off?” Mwamondwe asked.
“Mr. Speaker, Sir, the honourable member is informed that Karonga-Chitipa water supply project has delayed mainly due to inadequate resources available on the National Water Development Project,” Mlanga told the House.
The minister, however, added government and the World Bank have authorised the Northern Region Water Board to utilise a small balance available for the project to start “in view of the emergency situation which resulted from the washing away of boreholes due to flooding of Rukuru river.”
He said the project was expected to start this August.
Responding to another question, Mlanga told the House that his ministry was aware that there were inadequate boreholes in Dedza district. He said his ministry has plans to increase the number of water points to cater for the increasing population in the district.
Dedza Central MP Malango Banda (MCP) asked the ministry to consider drilling three boreholes at Linthipe Trading Centre.
“My ministry is aware that the existing water points in the district are not adequate due to the rapid population growth of the area,” Mlanga said adding that the ministry was in the process of assessing the water demand and the condition of existing boreholes in the district.
“Once this is established, the ministry will consider drilling additional boreholes in the mentioned sites under the ministry’s on-going programme,” he said.
