Seven men aged between 20 and 30 years were arrested last Friday after, according to police, being caught “red handed” with telephone cables worth over K3.7 million.
Police spokesman George Chikowi said on Monday the seven were being suspected of disrupting telephones for the Libyan Embassy, Red Cross Head Office, Botanical Gardens, Masaf, Lilongwe Water Board, City Centre Clinic , Seventh Day Adventist and the whole of Area 14 in Lilongwe.
Chikowi said the police and Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) security personnel mounted an operation on Friday night and arrested the seven people.
“Three of them were caught in the manholes as they were cutting telephone cables while the other four were arrested from their houses,” said Chikowi.
He identified the seven as John Malikebu (28) from Mulanje, Salifu Misomali (28) from Ntcheu, Patrick Biyeni (25) from Ntcheu, Isaac Banda (27) from Kasungu, Warrace Elofodi (20) from Ntcheu, Tsoka Enesito (30) from Dedza and Lawrence Filipo (30) from Dedza.
“These people are being kept at Maula Prison in Lilongwe as more investigations are taking place. They have been charged with theft,” said Chikowi.
He said the seven will “soon appear before court”.
