Plan for games referees told

Central Region referees have been reminded to plan for a game before stepping on to the pitch.
“Planning before the game is very important. Sleep in time, avoid night-long activities because these will spoil your game. Referees and their assistants should plan together before going to the pitch and should work in co-operation to improve the game, even within the game through eye contact,” Fifa and Caf instructor Bester Kalombo said on Friday.
Kalombo was addressing a high level training course at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe where referees were taught to be alert on body contacts and should follow the action from close range.
“A good referee is one who should position himself at a place in a way that he should see body contact because football these days is becoming wrestling,” said Kalombo.
Kalombo said referees could not improve and officiate international games if they were not trained according to Fifa rules, that was why he was sacrificing his time and resources.
A referees job is to protect players to play well and should be able to defend his judgement as well as prevent incidences on the pitch.
“Football Association of Malawi has no money to train referees as at now. It is supposed to train match commissioners and referees but unfortunately it says it has no money for the training,” added Kalombo.
For your information, I have been to North twice and to the South twice using my own money for transport because I want Malawian referees to compete internationally.
He said refereeing and coaching were the best tools to develop and improve football in the country.
“We have good referees in the country like Verson Lwanja, Winstard Sinago and Austico.”
“Both are capable of officiating games and are going to officiate the quarterfinals of Africa Cup of Nations, which is the first time for Malawian refs. The last ref to officiate in a Caf Cup it was myself,” said the Caf/Fifa instructor.
Among other topics, the referees were drilled on obstruction, positioning, body contacts, player shielding and rules of the game.
