Fam rejects Ziese’s demand
by Garry Chirwa, 14 July 2006 - 06:27:12
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Thursday turned down Flames’ coach Burkhard Ziese’s demand that the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) should postpone some of the weekend fixtures as a precautionary measure ahead of next weekend’s Cosafa Castle Cup mini-tournament to be held in Namibia.
The decision followed Sulom’s concern on Ziese’s stance not to release his charges for club duties at the weekend.
Fam general secretary Yasin Osman said the decision was made following a meeting which the association had with Sulom.
“In the interest of all parties we have agreed that the games will not be postponed. The Rules and Regulations of the league are clear that players shall be released on a Thursday and shall return on a Monday up to the last weekend leading to an international game,” said Osman.
However, Ziese stuck to his guns insisting that he could not release his charges for club duties barely a week before the international games.
“As the coach I am saying that the players will not be released because even Fifa rules stipulate that players cannot be released one week prior to an international game. I even made my position clear to the Fam president (Walter Nyamilandu),” said Ziese.
According to the Rules and Regulations of the flagship league, any team that contributes more than three players to the national team, is supposed to be exempted from fixtures.
Four teams—Big Bullets, MTL Wanderers, Super Escom and Silver Strikers have contributed more than three players to the Flames.
According to Sulom fixtures, Super Escom are scheduled to take on Nchalo United this Saturday, Silver are supposed to face Admarc Tigers while the nomads are scheduled to travel to Dwangwa to meet Dwangwa United.
On Sunday, Silver are supposed to engage Red Lions while Bullets are expected to take on Sammy’s United.
