England star coming again
by Garry Chirwa, 11 July 2006 - 06:58:30
Fresh from the global showcase—the World Cup, England’s second choice goal tender David James will visit Malawi again this weekend for a charity cause.
The towering goal-minder first visited the country last year along with two other big names—defenders Rio Ferdinand and Garry Neville — to assist in spreading HIV and Aids awareness messages to the youth.
This time around, James, who runs David James Foundation (DJF), a United Kingdom registered charity organisation, will be coming to enter into partnership with a local charity organisation called The Samaritan Trust (TST) which was established to assist street children with shelter, basic education, food and vocational skills training.
According to TST’s executive director Geoffrey Mbuzi, James is expected to jet in through Chileka International Airport on Saturday afternoon and will visit TST’s Skills Training Centre at Green Corner along Chikwawa Road.
“Later on in the evening there will be a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony at Ryalls Hotel. On Sunday afternoon David will feature in a game involving street kids at Blantyre Sports Club.
“On Sunday evening we have organised a fund-raising dinner at Blantyre Sports Club where guests will pay K1,500 each and will have an opportunity to interact with him and maybe chat about the experiences at the World Cup,” said Mbuzi.
He explained that during the dinner, James will also auction souvenirs from the World Cup.
Mbuzi also said it is anticipated that James’ organisation will provide support in the form of capital investment to strengthen the existing and new income generating activities.
Mbuzi said James developed interest to support the rights of street children following his visit last year. He is expected to return to England on Monday.
The TST executive director also appealed to the general public to support the noble duty of assisting the street children by participating in a grand raffle whose tickets are selling at K500 each and the winners will go away with fantastic prizes which will include K50,000 cash, a return air ticket to Johannesburg and a decoder from DStv, among others.
