New line of thinking from The Basement
by Herbert Chandilanga, 04 July 2006 - 04:42:02
They come in their trio and call themselves The Basement. Their business is hip hop and they are the masters behind the Bwanyamulenge accolade. When they call, many hip fans ran.
The Basement––Michael Kauka aka Abner and the Mkorongo brothers, Patali aka Cyclone and Randy–– have announced their arrival on the music block with a debut dubbed The Nu State of Mind.
That Nu State of Mind, they say, is to have every man stand up for themselves, realise who they are and live reality.
“We are aiming at bringing about a breath of fresh air on the country’s hip hop scene. We want to do something that will tell every youth the time is now, we are the leaders in this day and we should act accordingly.”
“We want to spearhead a transition. We must realise who we are, no false pretence...some people have tried to be what they are not and they unfortunately landed themselves into trouble. Some have tried to acquire things fraudulently, hurting themselves in the end. We want to be what we are. That’s why unlike many others we even do some of our hip hop in Chichewa,” says Abner.
“We’re a hip hop group trying to entertain and inform. We feel people should do things as they should be done, and not as they see others do them,” says Cyclone.
Randy says the groups mission is not to undermine old timers on the Malawi music stage.
“We want take hip hop to another level, that’s all. We are not saying we are the pioneers, no. But we just want to bring in a new dimension and make Malawian hip hop better so people can enjoy it more,” says Randy.
The Basement’s first step in the hip hop journey, the Nu State of Mind includes Throw it Up, Chasing the Wind, Vimbuza, How it Amazes Me and Chilembwe Face which were produced by Dizzy, Bwanyamulenge and Song of Gratitude produced by Dynamike, Malawi and It’s All Good by Chisomo Mussa, Music by Baby Jinx, Me by G.D and Write About What produced by Dizzy and G.D.
All the songs were mastered by Dynamike.
The album was released in February and is expected out, according to the group, in August.
