Zambian name squard for Castle Cup
by Garry Chirwa, 16 June 2006 - 06:59:09
Zambia’s Chipolopolo set the ball rolling in their preparations for the regional Cosafa Castle Cup showcase at the weekend when they named a full strength squad for next month’s clash against the Flames in Windhoek, Namibia. The squad includes three overseas-based professionals.
One of Zambia’s leading dailies, Times of Zambia, also reported on Thursday that the Zambian Football Association (Faz) has engaged an extra gear in preparation for the mini-tournament by hiring experienced Patrick Phiri as care-taker coach to take over from Kalusha Bwalya and his assistant Ben Bamfuchile who quit their respective posts recently.
England-based beefy forward Collins ‘Ntontofo’ Mbesuma who plays for English Premiership outfit Portsmouth, Malaysian-based midfielder Gift Kampamba and Andrew Sinkala who turns out for Germany side Sp Vgg Unterhaching, have been included in the squad which also includes eight other foreign-based players who ply their trade in South Africa and Angolan leagues.
Phiri was quoted as saying: “Our friends [Malawi] are already in camp and will be participating in the mini-tournament in Mozambique and we also need to intensify our preparations.”
The Zambians are expected to start camp training in Kitwe on Monday and will hold three-day training sessions until two weeks before departure for the Namibian capital.
Winners of the Flames-Chipolopolo clash will take on victors of the match between hosts Namibia and islanders Seychelles the following day (July 23) to determine Group C winner who will wing into the semis to join defending champions Zimbabwe’s Warriors, the region’s World Cup ambassadors Angola’s Negras Palancas and Botswana’s Zebras.
The Flames are already in camp at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe and their preparations will be beefed by their participation in the four-nation mini tournament in Mozambique next week which will also include Swaziland and the Warriors.
