‘Zambian poacher’ killed at Vwaza'
by Francis Tayanjah-Phiri, 16 June 2006 - 06:44:55
Remains of a man suspected to be a Zambian poacher killed by an elephant were found in Vwaza Game Reserve in Rumphi last week.
Rumphi Police publicist Victor Khamisi confirmed in an interview on Tuesday that park workers spotted the man’s remains.
He said both police and park officials suspect an elephant killed the man sometime last year.
“Our officers went there after receiving a report from the park manager, and verified that the remains were bones of a man. We suspect that the remains were of a Zambian poacher who reportedly went missing within the park last year,” said Khamisi.
However, Khamisi said police are yet to make a concrete opinion on the identity of the deceased although a village headman from Zambia reported about one of his subjects missing.
“The village headman reported that one of his four subjects who went into Vwaza on a poaching mission had gone missing. [And] reports of Zambian poachers in Vwaza and Nyika National parks are regular,” said Khamisi.
