President Bakili Muluzi says he is proud of small-scale business people who are prospering because of the liberalised economy.
Speaking when he opened the budget session of Parliament on Friday, Muluzi said since the liberalisation of the economy in 1994, there has been noticeable growth of business activities, including street vending.
“What is most pleasing to me, Mr. Speaker Sir, is the growth in the number of small-scale traders in and around market squares in urban and rural centres. I am proud to say that those who are doing small-scale businesses as vendors or hawkers are prospering in our liberalised economy,” the President said.
He also said he was happy to see foreign companies in retail and wholesale business opening shops in the country. He mentioned Shoprite, Metro, Supreme and Carnival Furnishers as companies that have taken advantage of liberalisation of the economy to compete in the country.
Muluzi said he was confident the private sector could generate wealth and create jobs so that people break free from poverty and help government to generate revenue to improve public and social services.
