President Bakili Muluzi has asked people in the country to change their eating habits and regard maize as one of the many food crops.
Muluzi said this in his state of the nation address at the opening of this year’s budget session of Parliament on Friday, saying that people should not focus on maize nsima alone when there are other food crops.
“Let me appeal to all Malawians to diversify their eating habits. We should not focus on maize nsima alone when we have many other food crops available,” the president said.
The majority of people in the country faced an acute maize shortage in recent months, resulting in some of them depending on maize bran (madeya) and wild foods.
The president said it was high time smallholder farmers diversified food crop production so that in addition to maize, they also grow cassava, potatoes, sorghum and rice.
However, the president assured the nation that the government would do everything possible to ensure the development of the agriculture sector.
“The development of the agriculture sector in terms of increased productivity is a slow process requiring the full attention of us all,” he cautioned.
