An ongoing survey by the National Statistical Office and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to provide data necessary for improving education standards in the country will cost US$134,000 (about K10.2 million), The Nation has learnt.
Survey Director Jameson Ndawala said in an interview on Tuesday that United States Agency for International Development (Usaid), Canadian International Development Agency (Cida) and Department for International Development (DFID) have funded the exercise.
Ndawala said parents are the main target group in the exercise, adding that the main objective is to identify reasons why some children are not attending or playing truant from school.
“We want to go where children are coming from. We want to hear from parents why their children are staying away from school. The information will help government review policies and readjust where necessary,” said Ndawala.
The survey will also help government to measure differences across the country in education participation, estimate the costs of schooling and monitor education, according to a press statement released on Monday.
The statement said the data will provide an education database to be used by researchers in investigating topics related to education.
Ndawala said from 10,000 numeration areas selected throughout the country, 130 sample areas have been identified with at least 35 households being interviewed in each sample area.
The exercise started on Tuesday and will end mid July.
