The Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (Creccom) has introduced a community radio station in Mchinji to help fight HIV and Aids.
Creccom executive director Zikani Kaunda said in an interview on Tuesday the radio is currently relaying MBC broadcasts on Thursdays as it awaits full installation of equipment. The radio is known as M’mudzi Mwathu, literally translated as ‘In My Village.’
Kaunda said the radio, currently funded by the United States Agency for International Development, will play an important role in promoting human rights and disseminating information on HIV and Aids.
“The radio will be run by communities themselves so that it covers relevant information on issues that affect their lives,” said Kaunda.
Kaunda said the participation of communities in producing their own programmes was the only way to achieve sustainable HIV prevention.
“We want people to talk about their lives and how they live in the wake of the pandemic. We want them to share experiences and discuss topical issues on their own radio station,” said Kaunda.
Meanwhile, Creccom has announced a new board of directors chaired by educationist Mathew Chilambo of Chancellor College who replaces Nelson Kapelemera, director of basic education with the Ministry of Education.
Other board members include Dr Samson MacJesse also of Chancellor College, Dr Dennis Kunje a research fellow at the Centre for Education Research and Training, Margaret Longwe, a financial controller with CARD, lawyer Phoebe Chikungwa, senior Chief Kadewere of Chiradzulu and Christobel Chakwawa principal gender officer at ministry of gender.
Kaunda said the new board has the mandate to ensure that Creccom achieves all its goals as outlined on the organisation’s strategic plan.
