Adra, McGraw-Hill donate K90m books
by Nation Reporter, 04 May 2006 - 05:04:45
In an effort to help reduce the country’s illiteracy levels, the Adventist Development Relief Agency (Adra) in association with one of the world’s leading publishing company McGraw-Hill, on Wednesday donated books worth over K90 million to over 23 educational and service institutions in the country.
Making the donation, Adra country director Tayo Odeyemi called on the beneficiaries to take good care and make use of the books. He further appealed to the organisations to make sure that the books reach the intended beneficiaries.
On his part, Principal Education Method Advisor for South West Education Division in the Ministry of Education Des Trigu noted that the ministry does not take the donation for granted.
“Since the advent of free primary education in 1994, we have faced a lot of challenges, one of which is the lack of resources,” he said, adding that the ministry has tried to put interventions in place.
“On the shortage of books, as a ministry we have tried to put some interventions in place, like the Textbook Revolving Fund where pupils contribute K250 per session. So when we have moments like these when people step in to assist us, we are very grateful,” he said.
Some of the organisations that have benefited from the donation include Chancellor College, the Polytechnic, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Institute of Journalism, Malawi Institute of Education, Malawi College of Education and Nation Publications Limited.
