Having pulverised new comers Eagle Beaks 5-1 in a friendly match a week earlier, giants Silver Strikers found the Beaks a recharged side on Monday when they struggled to earn full points in a TNM Super League opener at Nankhaka Ground in Area 30.
Midfielder Ulanda Kalua scared the league debutants with a five minute strike before another midfielder Peter Mgangira gave his side hopes of another massacre with the second goal scored from a free kick.
Half time caught the new comers trailing 2-0. But the last half was a nightmare for the bankers, who were clearly out-played by the new comers.
The giants were on the verge of collapsing when Beaks’ match maker Mussa Alikeni made it 2-1 on the half hour mark. But defender Ben Chinganyama took the bankers out of danger with a 20 metre missile that beat substitute goalkeeper Kondwani Makunganya.
The goal did not take off the steam out of the youngsters, who kept stretching the visitors.
Amid pressure from the lads, international Emmanuel Chipatala handled as he chest-controlled the ball in the box. A penalty was awarded to Beaks and Norious Njoka sent Silver’s goalkeeper Terence Kandoje the wrong side, making it 3-2.
The youngsters suffered a major blow in their quest for an equaliser when Alikeni limped off the pitch with an injury after being fouled by a Silver defender.
Despite the result, fans praised Beaks as a young promising side with plenty of skill that might prove useful for national junior teams like the Under 20 and Under 17 teams.
Beaks’ coach Bravo Chiperesa said he was not disappointed with the performance of his charges.
“I am not disappointed. We are coming from the lower league but we gave Silver Strikers a tough time. We have learnt a few things from today’s game and I have no doubt we have come to stay in the league.”
Silver’s assistant coach Stain Chirwa admitted the youngsters gave his side a torrid time especially in the second half.
“But the most important thing is that we have got the full points,” he said.
