Mzuzu prison escapee nabbed
by Edwin Nyirongo, 27 April 2006 - 07:30:19
Police in Karonga have arrested one of the five hard core prisoners that escaped from prison earlier this month.
The prisoner, Abraham Mwakasungula was on remand at Mzuzu prison after he was arrested in connection with a robbery at Mzuzu Treasury office using fire arms and burglary.
Karonga Police Public Relations Officer Enock Livason said on Tuesday Mwakasungula was arrested at Malemia 1 Village in T/A Kyungu in the district after a tip from the public.
“Some people who saw him in the village tipped the police who then arrested him,” he said.
Livason said the arrest is a good step for the police as it will give them a clue about where the other four prisoners are hiding.
Five hard core prisoners escaped from prison on April 2, after taking advantage of a Sunday tradition where they are allowed to wear civilian clothes.
They are Frank Kashili, who abducted Mzuzu Chief Resident Magistrate Dingiswayo Madise, Paul Kanyika who abducted Malawi Army Intelligence officer Major Dzoole, Frank Phiri, Jeremia Chimwala and Mwakasungula himself.
They used a gun which was smuggled into the prison allegedly by putting it into a baby’s clothes the wife of Kashili carried when she visited
him.
One prisoner Paul Kanyika was shot dead after a fire exchange with the police as the five were escaping.
The prison officers who were on duty at the time have been interdicted and the officer-in-charge has been transferred to Ntcheu.
Meanwhile, prison authorities are planning to transfer hard-core prisoners to Zomba where there is maximum security, according to prison sources.
