by Olivia Kumwenda, 27 April 2006 - 07:26:32
Police in Mponela are keeping in custody a 28-year-old man for allegedly raping a 60-year-old woman.
Mponela Police publicist Kondwani Kandiado on Wednesday said the man, Rodgers Burnnet, found the woman in her field where she went to get vegetables.
“She was at first in the company of her two daughters who left earlier for the village to prepare food and when the suspect saw that the old woman was alone he went in the field and asked if he could have sex with her,” alleged Kandiado.
He claimed that when the woman gave Burnnet a cold shoulder, he physically assaulted her until she fell to the ground.
“He then removed her underwear by force and raped her but, according to the woman, the suspect was weakened when she decided to squeeze his private parts and she run way to the village where she informed her relatives who reported the matter to police,” Kandiado said.
He said the woman, who suffered minor wounds in the head due to the struggle with the suspect, was taken to Dowa District Hospital where a medical report confirmed the alleged rape.
Burnnet, who hails from Kalivuti Village in T/A Dzowole in Dowa, is expected to appear before court soon to answer a rape charge.
