Deputy Information Minister and Blantyre City East MP, John Bande and Salima Central parliamentarian Augustine Chidzanja were on target as Members of Parliament humbled Lilongwe Media Stars 2-1 in an entertaining match played at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Friday.
Bande scored the opener from close range after a stand in goalkeeper for the journalists had left his goal unguarded.
The lawmakers, featuring match-maker Billy Kaunda from Blantyre City South East, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Roy Commsy, Kasungu West’s Sailesi Gulule, Blantyre City Central’s Gift Mwamondwe and dribbling wizard Frank Kuseni of Dowa Central East, were the better team in the first half, which ended 1-0 in their favour.
The journalists regrouped in the second half but their attacking midfielder Pilirani Phiri of Zodiac Broadcasting Station, and strikers Martins Naminga and George Mlanga from Dispatch newspaper could not beat experienced goalkeeper Charles Jephter.
Chidzanja, then dashed the journalists’ hopes of a comeback after receiving a through ball from exciting Commsy.
In the dying moments, Mlanga hit a face saver for the media practitioners.
The journalists’ coach M’thetho Lungu blamed the loss on the absence of some top like Bwanali Makote, Chaliwa Katola and Chiyembekezo Kapatamoyo.
“But my boys were intimidated by the heavy presence of policemen. They did not know what would befall them after the game,” claimed Lungu flanked by his assistant Wisdom Chimgwede and a top fan Rebecca Chimjeka.
MPs’ captain Billy Kaunda, whose side also missed such big names as John Tembo, coach/player Justin Malewezi, Uladi ‘Change Golo’ Mussa, Thom Chakufwa Chihana and Brown ‘BJ’ Mpinganjira formerly a Limbe Leaf Wanderers official dismissed Lungu’s claim as ‘a total lie.’
“The police were there to ensure the safety of vehicles outside and to see to it that the game was not disturbed by outside forces. The journalists might have been intimidated by the presence of our big stars.
“But it was an entertaining game and we enjoyed it. The only set back was that we played for 30 minutes in each half to pave way for Civo’s training. We are looking forward to meeting the journalists again before the end of this Parliament session,” said Kaunda.
