Grace Mhango, sponsor of the Chiukepo Mhango National Women Football League, has announced an increment in the league’s sponsorship from last year’s K400,000 to K500,000 this year.
The sponsor said during a press conference held at Mpira House on Wednesday that the sponsorship has been increased because she was impressed with the way the funding was administered by the National Womens Football League (Nawofle).
Apart from increasing the sponsorship, Mhango, wife to the late footballer Chiukepo Mhango who played for MTL Wanderers and the national team alongside incumbent Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu in the 90s, also disclosed that she had sourced two sets of uniform and one set of boots from a Lilongwe-based businessman, a Mr. Osman.
“Last year I missed the regional finals of the North but I watched the finals of the Centre and the South and I was impressed with the talent that the girls have.
“I would therefore like to thank the people who are taking care of those 11 players because what I am doing is simply sponsoring, but there are people such as coaches and team managers who are full time close to the girls, giving them guidance and leading them into a better future,” she said.
Added Mhango: “You should also be sourcing sponsorship on one-to-one basis with prospective sponsors, because much as there are people willing to sponsor, it takes somebody to approach them, just like the Fam president approached me”.
She also advised the regional leagues to agree on a common format of play, either to be playing on league basis or on knock-out basis, saying last year’s format did not show uniformity in administration.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Nawofle chair Dorothy Kasito said the development has opened another chapter in the country’s women football.
“Through our mother body Fam, we will use this league to reach to the grassroots levels in the development of women football and we still appeal to other companies to help us since women football in the country is still at its infant stage,” she said.
