Former South African President Nelson Man-dela arrived in the country yesterday for a two-day visit which will see him open the Rotary International District 9210 Assembly and Conference in Mangochi today.
Rotary International’s District 9210 Governor Rafiq Nathanie said in an earlier interview that Muluzi would be honoured with the Paul Harris Fellow award, Rotary’s highest honour bestowed on individuals who have exceptionally assisted their communities.
“This is an honour that is given to any member of the community for a major achievement,” Nathanie was quoted as saying.
Muluzi, according to Nathanie, has long been a Rotarian. He was a member of the Limbe Rotary Club in the 1990s.
The conference will bring together representatives of the Rotary Clubs in the District comprising Malawi, northern Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
On arrival, Mandela hailed Muluzi’s peace initiatives in the region and beyond.
“He [Muluzi] is very devoted to peace and I have always supported him,” he said.
International media, notably SABC and BBC, said Mandela would hold talks with Sadc chair Muluzi on the conflict in the Great Lakes region.
