In tears and wishing he could stay longer, Japanese singer Kohei Yamada who came into the Malawi music limelight with his song Ndimakukonda is heading for home in Japan after expiry of his contract with Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
“I’m at a loss of words. I’ve been in Malawi since December 2003. I knew time for me to go back home would come but I didn’t expect that it would come this fast. I made friends and got a lot of love and generosity from them.”
“My heart is bleeding now that I have to leave all these behind. It should not come as a surprise then if you see me back . I will miss the good people who used to cook nsima for me, a dish I liked very much,” said the seemingly sad Kohei.
He said among his many wishes now is to come back to Malawi and record an album.
“I loved people with whom I played music. They were supportive and very encouraging. They took me as one of them,” he emphasised.
He said Jica was arranging to have his two songs recorded onto CDs to be distributed to individuals and VCT centres free of charge.
“For now, people should have that for a reminder. I will make sure I come back and see them again,” he said.
Kohei, who was attached to Ministry of Agriculture in Karonga as a volunteer, came as a sweet surprise on local television.
He did Ndimakukonda, a song that emphasises the need for voluntary counselling and testing among the youth. His other piece which he did with legendary Mlaka Maliro found its way to most radio stations.
