Police have said they have arrested seven people in connection to theft of relief maize sought by the Department for International Development (DfID) in the country in two separate incidence.
Police Southern Region Headquarters public relations officer Nora Ndala said the incidents happened last week in Thyolo and Blantyre people diverted maize meant for storage in Admarc selling points but landed in wrong places.
In Thyolo, Police at Luchenza arrested three people when police got a tip that maize meant to be delivered at Luchenza Admarc “was instead delivered at Limbuli in Mulanje at somebody’s house. People became suspicious and reported the matter to police.”
The lorry a UD Nissan registration number MJ 614 carrying 240 bags each weighing 50kg was being driven by Fayison Kaliati, 23, of Nkando Village, T/A Juma in Mulanje. Others are Wanangwa Msiska, 27, Chabambo Village in T/A Mtwalo in Mzimba and Davie Ngwanile whose other details were not readily available.
Ndala explained that there has been no recovery of 240 bags. The three are expected to appear before a court of law at Luchenza today (Tuesday).
In another development four people were arrested for being found to be connected to the diverting 1,200 bags of maize which was meant for Balaka and Salima Admarc selling points.
According to Police the four delivered maize at Countryside warehouse in Blantyre when the maize was meant for the two Admarc selling points. “They used fake registration numbers and when the receiver got the maize he was surprised and the matter was reported to Mulli Brothers who were responsible for the delivery and the four were arrested in Chikwawa.”
The arrested are Saladi Dinala, 30, Bwanali village of T/A Katuli in Mangochi, Sadoki Mitende, 27, Mwachande Village T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre, Ramsy Khumbanyiwa,33, T/A Chikumbu in Mulanje and Laston Kamwaza, 34, of Somba village T/A Khombeza.
Police say they have recovered 38 bags of maize flour at Countryside warehouse and they say they are continuing with investigations. The suspects will be brought to book soon, police have said.
Mulli Brothers were the main transport contractors but subcontracted to K& M to move the maize from Admarc in Limbe to Salima and Balaka. |
