It is six days to Valentine’s Day – the day when the ‘haves’ cherish most and the ‘have nots’ curse. It is a day when a mere whisper of love by the ‘haves’ to their better halves means a lot. Its fever is taking its toll and it has spared no place. Lilongwe is no exception in this regard.
The youths who are always ‘hard hit’ by this fever have organised a Mr and Miss Valentine contest in a bid to shake off the fever this weekend.
According to the organisers, Malawi Dzuka Promotion the contest will take place this Sunday at the Playaz Club in Lilongwe’s Area 47.
“As the fever builds up we felt we should come up with this contest before the actual Valentine Day. We felt if we do it after the February 14 then the excitement might not be there,” explains Ntchindi Meki who is the group’s Communications Officer.
Meki said his group is working hand in hand with Miss Lilongwe and Miss Malawi Rachel Landson in identifying of the young men and ladies.
Judging from events that are slated for this weekend, Blantyre is due to be gripped in a Valentine fever as well as several organisations have taken it upon themselves to organise separate Mr and Miss Valentine shows.
In Blantyre, the group called Singers, Poets, Actors and Dancers Amalgamated (Spada) will on Sunday set foot at the French Cultural Centre where they will hold a Miss Valentine 2006 modelling contest featuring contestants from around the city.
The group’s publicity secretary Allen Mphepo said apart from the Miss Valentine showdown, the day would also be spiced up with events like band performances, dancers, acrobats, Ajukuja the Clown, a family game show and drum majorettes––a group of about 30 girls who perform to the rhythm of a drum.
“We have had sponsorship from among others hotels Ryalls and Mount Soche, Rab Processors, Banja La Mtsogolo, Shoprite, Universal Industries and Population Services International.”
“They have helped us set up prizes for patrons to be decided through a raffle draw. Lucky ones will go away with prizes like dinner for two at Ryalls and bed and breakfast for two for two days at the same hotel,” said Mphepo.
Meanwhile, fun-loving Blantyre youths are in for a treat on the same Sunday when Best Art Panorama host a Mr and Miss Valentine contest at The Warehouse Cultural Centre.
Chairman of Best Arts Panorama Charles Kamwana said some of the activities for the day will include a Mr and Miss Valentine contest, rap and ragga and dancing competitions.
“Girls over the age of 18 years are allowed to participate in the contest and these include professional and aspiring models who have been undergoing daily rehearsals at the Warehouse in preparation for the fashion parade,” he said.
He added that the show will be complemented by male models.
Kamwana, who disclosed that judgement of the winner will be based on talent and not beauty, added that there would be fabulous prizes for the winners.
“The show has been organised with the aim of providing entertainment to young people while keeping them away from immoral behaviour. We also want to exploit talents that young people have but which usually go unnoticed,” he said.
Last year’s winners are Yamikani Triggery Chandiyang’ana and Sherrifa Bakairi.
On the same congested Sunday afternoon, another section of young people will be drawn towards yet another Miss Valentine beauty contest that has been organised by Makobidi and Company and will be held at Limbe Country Club.
The show, which has been christened ‘The Valentine Delight Show’, will feature high-flying musical outfit Nyasa Gurus, and the Diplomats among others.
Activities for the day will include a musical showdown, dancing competition plus cold drinks and hot sizzling braai for good measure.
Makobidi and Company spokesperson Happy Mkweu claimed that the show is going to be presented in a new style and is aimed at promoting young talent.
He said the contestants will parade in casual, office, traditional and dinner wear.
