Bishop elect’s fate today
by Felix Malamula, 29 November 2005 - 06:57:41
The Anglican Church Court of Confirmation meets today [Tuesday] in Lilongwe to decide the fate of Nicholas Henderson, Bishop-Elect for Lake Malawi Diocese.
The court was supposed to take place on September 3, but was put on hold by Archbishop Bernard Malango after reports alleged that Henderson advocates for gay and lesbian movements.
Lawyer for those objecting the confirmation of the new bishop, Steve Kafumba, confirmed on Monday that the Court of Confirmation sits today at the St. Peters Church in Area 3 Lilongwe.
He could not, however, disclose the grounds the objectors have against the confirmation of the new bishop, saying everything would be made public at the court.
“I don’t have to do that because everything will be mentioned at the court since it is an open court and everybody is free to attend,” he said.
Weekend Nation reported in September that Malango had postponed the court because of letters of protest he had received from both local and overseas people over Henderson’s alleged support of gay movements.
Henderson is also reported to be an active member of the liberal Modern Churchpeople’s Union (MCU) which advances and defends homosexuality and gay beliefs in the Anglican Church.
One of the objectors, who is based in Nkhotakota, alleged in an interview that Malango is in support of Henderson’s confirmation.
“The issue is very difficult because Archbishop Malango is supporting confirmation of Henderson. But whatever the case, we will go ahead with the issue to see that Henderson is not confirmed because we do not want him,” he said.
Malango could not be reached through his mobile phone on Saturday and Monday.
The court of confirmation will comprise about 13 bishops from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, according to the source.
