Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) director of Infrastructure Amos Marawa was in the country to familiarise himself with the Shire/Zambezi Waterway Project.
Marawa’s visit follows a meeting of Comesa transport ministers in Egypt, which formally adopted the Shire Zambezi Waterway Project.
On Saturday he inspected the facilities at the port of Nsanje along the Shire River, the proposed dry port at Liwonde and lake transport infrastructure and services at Monkey Bay and Chipoka.
“The project will make Malawi one of the main transportation hubs in Comesa as it will benefit other countries in the hinterland like Zambia, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania by providing access to Indian Ocean ports through the Mtwara, Nacala and Sena corridors,” said Marawa.
He also said the project will also spur development of other sectors such as agriculture and agro-processing, tourism, mining and fishing.
“The job creation potential of this project is substantial as jobs will be created directly on the corridor itself and indirectly through support services and industries,” said Marawa in a press statement.
Marawa’s visit is part of preparations for the visits by investors from Egypt who will be led by the Egyptian minister of transportation Professor Assam Sharaf who is also current chair of Comesa ministers of transport, communications and public works.
The minister is expected to visit the project early next month, according to the statement. The team of investors accompanying the minister will include president of Comesa Business Council Mohamed Awal, who owns a fleet of ships, both containers and bulk cargo.
