Kenyan athletics coach Elizabeth Olaba will jet in tomorrow to assist the Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) in preparing its athletes for the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games slated for July.
Olaba, one of the best coaches in Kenya, was identified by the Olympics and Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi (Ocgam) through the Kenya National Olympic Committee.
Ocgam general secretary Mathews Kambale said in an interview the association should have invited Olaba earlier but there was no money to pay for her stay in Malawi.
“We only got the money in March and it took some time to finalise everything until we received the OK from Kenya,” said Kambale.
Kambale said Olaba will be staying at Grace Bandawe Conference Centre but later on they will find a house for her and she will observe training sessions of Blantyre athletes on Monday next week.
“On Wednesday she will go to Zomba and after that we will draw a training programme,” he said.
According to Kambale, athletes who will represent Malawi at the Commonwealth Games will go in camp mid-June and the final squad will consist of four.
“Tentatively we expect to have two male and female athletes but that is subject to change depending on the final assessment,” he said.
After the Commonwealth Games, Olaba will be engaged in a Talent Identification Project.
