Kanyenda’s club kicked out
by Garry Chirwa, 25 August 2005 - 08:14:27
Essau Kanyenda’s Russian crack outfit Lokomotiv Moscow, on Tuesday night failed to make it to the group stages of the Uefa Champions League after going down 0-1 to Rapid Vienna of Austria at home in Moscow.
Rapid Vienna have qualified to the group stages of the elite competition on 2-1 aggregate having held the Russian giants one-all in the first leg played in Vienna last week.
The Malawian hitman, said he was thrown in as a second half substitute, but failed to grab the much needed equaliser.
“I am very disappointed that we are out of the Champions league because had we qualified into the group stages it would have provided me the opportunity for more exposure.
“I really tried my best to score my first goal for Lokomotiv which would have been a timely gift for my second born son Wayne who was born on August 8, but all my attempts were thwarted,” said Kanyenda.
However, the robust forward said his consolation is that his team will now play in the Uefa Cup whose draw will be conducted tomorrow.
Lokomotiv Moscow are currently leading the Russian top-flight league with 44 points, seven points ahead of their rivals and Uefa Cup champions CSKA Moscow who play Liverpool in the European Super Cup on Friday.
Kanyenda joined Lokomotiv from relegation-threatened FC Rostov last month.
